Veteran-Centered Acupuncture Care

Natural Relief Through the VA Community Care Network

Did you know that if you served in the military and now receive healthcare through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), you may be eligible to receive acupuncture treatments through the VA Community Care Network (formerly the Veterans Choice Program)?

Thanks to the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act of 2014, veterans may qualify for community-based care—including acupuncture—when certain criteria are met. These include:

  • Living more than 40 miles from the nearest VA medical facility

  • Facing wait times longer than 30 days for VA care

  • Or, in some cases, the VA not offering a particular service (like acupuncture) in-house

Because acupuncture is not widely available within VA facilities, many veterans do qualify for covered treatments through referrals from their VA provider. I currently treat retired military personnel and veterans referred through the VA daily here in San Diego.

Here’s How to Get Started

To receive acupuncture services through the VA Community Care Network:

  1. Speak with your VA primary care provider or care team and request a referral for acupuncture.

  2. You can also call 866-606-8198 to ask about eligibility for Community Care and verify if acupuncture is covered under your specific plan.

  3. When requesting a provider, you may ask for:
One Body AcupunctureDr. Ayanna Cobb, DACM, L.Ac.

Covered conditions may include:

  • Pain associated with illness or injury

  • Post-operative nausea and vomiting

  • Chemotherapy-related nausea

  • Osteoarthritis of the knee

  • Chronic low back pain

  • Depression or mental health concerns

  • Substance use support

Why I Do This Work

Growing up in Southern California, I was raised with deep pride in my Indigenous American roots and the strength of my ancestors—many of whom served in conflicts from the Indian Wars to Vietnam. Their legacy inspired me to serve, to heal, and to uplift.

After earning my degree from UCLA with a focus on Race, Ethnicity, and Stratification, I pursued a doctorate in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. I now blend Eastern and Western approaches to provide integrative, culturally informed care.

My mission is simple: To support veterans and their families with natural solutions that honor their service and promote lasting wellness.

If you’re a veteran—or supporting one—you’re welcome here.

VA Community Care Information

The VA's Community Care Program allows eligible veterans to receive health care services from approved providers in their local community when the VA cannot provide the care needed. This program is designed to ensure that veterans have access to timely and appropriate care through community providers, like Dr. Ayanna Cobb, who are part of the VA's Community Care Network.

To access services through the Community Care Program, veterans must receive a referral and authorization from their VA provider. This referral typically occurs when VA facilities are not able to provide the necessary care in a timely manner or if the veteran lives far from a VA facility.

Once a referral is made, veterans can schedule appointments with community providers who are part of the VA’s network. The VA will cover the cost of the authorized care, and veterans will be billed separately for any applicable copayments. For more details, veterans can visit the VA Community Care page
